Mastering 101: 7 Steps to Make Your Mixes Radio-Ready

Big Question: How can you make your music sound loud and professional enough for streaming, radio, or distribution?
Big Answer: By mastering your mix with precision and focus, you can achieve a balanced, impactful, and competitive sound that translates across all playback systems.

Mastering is the final step in music production, where your track is prepared for release. Here are 9 essential steps to help you master your mixes and make them radio-ready.

1. Start with a Great Mix

Mastering enhances your mix but doesn’t fix major issues. Start with a strong foundation.

  • Balance Levels: Make sure every element in your mix is audible and well-balanced.
  • Check Low-End Clarity: Simplify the bass and kick so they are clear and don’t clash with each other.
  • Fix Resonant Frequencies: Use a Dynamic EQ to eliminate harsh frequencies before mastering.

2. Prepare Your Mix for Mastering

Proper preparation ensures the mastering process runs smoothly.

  • Export at the Right Settings: Bounce your mix at 24-bit/48kHz with no dithering applied.
  • Leave Headroom: Make sure your mix peaks at around -6dB to allow room for mastering adjustments.
  • Turn Off Limiting: Avoid using limiters on the mix bus to prevent over-compression.

3. Apply Equalization for Balance

EQ is the first step to achieving tonal balance in your master.

  • Tame Problematic Frequencies: Cut muddiness around 250Hz or harshness around 3-5kHz.
  • Enhance the Low-End: Add a subtle boost around 60Hz–80Hz for warmth and punch.
  • Add Air: Use a high-shelf boost above 12kHz for an open, aetherial sound.

4. Use Compression to Control Dynamics

Compression allows for consistent levels and adds energy to your track.

  • Set a Low Ratio (1.5:1 – 2:1): Maintain dynamics while adding subtle control.
  • Adjust Attack and Release: Use a slow attack to preserve transients and a fast release for energy.
  • Avoid Over-Compression: Keep gain reduction minimal to retain the track’s natural feel.

5. Add Limiting for Loudness

A limiter helps bring your track up to competitive loudness levels.

  • Set the Ceiling to -0.1dB: Prevent digital clipping while maximizing loudness.
  • Adjust Threshold Carefully: Increase loudness without squashing the mix.
  • Watch for Distortion: Monitor low-end elements to ensure clarity and avoid distortion.

6. Enhance Stereo Width

Stereo imaging creates a wider, more immersive sound.

  • Widen High Frequencies: Apply subtle widening to elements like cymbals or synths.
  • Keep Bass Centered: Use mid/side EQ to ensure low frequencies remain mono.
  • Avoid Over-Widening: Maintain a natural stereo image to prevent phase issues.

7. Use Reference Tracks

Reference tracks guide your decisions and helps your master sound competitive in comparison.

  • Choose Similar Tracks: Select professionally mastered songs in the same genre as your track.
  • Match Tonal Balance: Compare EQ curves to identify areas for adjustment.
  • Check Loudness Levels: Use a loudness meter to match your track’s LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale) to industry standards.

8. Test on Multiple Playback Systems

A great master sounds good everywhere.

  • Use Studio Monitors and Headphones: Check your track on both for different perspectives.
  • Test on Consumer Devices: Play your track on earbuds, laptops, or car speakers.
  • Adjust for Consistency: Make subtle tweaks to ensure it translates well across systems.

9. Export for Final Delivery

The final step ensures your track is ready for release.

  • 24-Bit 48k Master: Export your file with a bit depth of 24-bit and a 48k sample rate.
  • Choose the Right Format: Export as a stereo interleaved WAV for maximum quality.
  • Label Clearly: Name your files with clear identifiers (e.g., SongName_Master.wav).
